International shipping supports the majority of global trade. While it needs to keep up with the increasing demand for global goods, there is a dire call for the sector to cut down its emissions. As one of the world’s largest shipping and logistics companies, Maersk is now on a mission to decarbonise its entire business by 2040.
We recently caught up with Jacob A. Sterling, Senior Director, Head of Ocean Decarbonisation and Innovation of Maersk Line, to dig deeper into how Maersk is navigating and implementing sustainability across its operations.
The company is moving away from fossil fuels and exploring alternative energy sources such as fuels made from renewable electricity or biomaterials. However, Jacob stressed that, particularly with biomaterials, it's imperative that we focus on how truly sustainable the sources are.
This is where Preferred by Nature is working with Maersk. By leveraging our Sustainability Framework, Maersk is able to get into the specifics to assess the sustainability of biomass or bio-feedstock materials that can be used for fuel production.
