Project objective
The primary objective of this project was to support sustainable forestry in Denmark through the development of operational guidelines.
Project approach
Using a participatory approach, the project developed operational guidelines for sustainable forest management in Denmark at forest estate level. The process involved all key stakeholder organisations, and three independent national expert group were established for providing inputs on the economic, social, and ecological aspects of sustainable forest management.
The resulting guidelines were tested through the development of forest management plans based on the guidelines, covering two state forests and two private forest operations. Subsequently, the economic, social and ecological consequences of realising the management plans were analysed and assessed by the expert groups. Based on this analysis and the experts’ recommendations, the guidelines were revised and completed.
Results and impact
The main result of the project was a set of operational guidelines for sustainable forestry in Denmark.
The planning process used in the testing and evaluation of the guidelines also comprised forest inventories, soil site mapping and development and testing of a methodology for woodland key habitat inventories in Denmark.
The forestry guidelines developed through this project subsequently formed the basis for development of the first Danish FSC Forest Management Standard.
