PEFC Chain of Custody (CoC) certification expands your market access by fulfilling many public and and private procurement policies.
PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) is a major international forest certification system.
PEFC Chain of Custody (CoC) certification verifies your compliance with the PEFC requirements and enables you to forward PEFC claims and labels to your customers.
NEPCon holds accreditation for PEFC CoC certification worldwide.

Key steps

Scope of your certificate: We will help you identify the scope of the certificate you need. Once you have accepted our offer, we will assign a NEPCon contact person for your organisation.
Prepare for certification: You develop company-specific CoC procedures and instruct all relevant staff. We review and provide feedback on your procedures prior to the on-site visit.
On-site audit: When you are ready, we conduct an on-site assessment to check your compliance with the PEFC CoC requirements. This is done through document reviews and staff interviews.
Draft report: We elaborate a formal report which is reviewed by a senior NEPCon expert and submitted to you for comments prior to its completion.
Certification: Based on a positive outcome, we issue your PEFC certificate. |
A PEFC chain of custody certificate is valid for five years. Annual audits during the validity period are required to maintain certification. Once the validity period ends, you need to undergo a re-assessment to renew your certificate.
Your options
The scope of your certificate
We can help you identify the type and scope of certification that best matches your needs. Below are some of the choices regarding the scope of an PEFC chain of custody certificate.
-
Traceability system: You need to choose between two main systems used for PEFC chain of custody certification: The physical separation method or the percentage based method - within the percentage based method there are several options. This is closely linked to your processes, in particular whether you will need to mix certified with non-certified material or not. You may need to select more than one system, depending on the complexity of your production and trade.
- Controlled Sources: Controlled Sources is a system for avoiding unacceptable sources such as illegally harvested wood, and is the only type of non-PEFC certified material that PEFC permits in PEFC "mixed sources" products.
-
Multi-site certification is particularly well-suited for organisations operating multiple sites, and for small-sized companies.
Larger/complex organisations operating several facilities are required to set up a robust internal auditing system and you assign a “central office” to manage your multi-site certificate. This reduces the requirements for external auditing and can reduce costs. Based on our global network of experts, we offer services involving local experts to multinational enterprises. We can also provide training of your suppliers.
Small enterprises may wish to join a Producer Group sharing a certificate, to save resources on certification. Note: only companies below a certain size are eligible to join a Producer Group. -
Project certification can be used to cover a construction or renovation project, ship-building projects and one-off production of a specific product. Project certification permits the project manager to make promotional claims about PEFC-certified input used for the project.

Your benefits
Five benefits of PEFC chain of custody certification
Access to labels and claims. PEFC certification permits you to forward the PEFC certified claim in the marketplace. Many procurement policies require products to be either FSC or PEFC certified. |
|
Ability to meet market demands. Many public and private procurement policies require or prefer certified material, including PEFC certified. |
|
Third-party assurance. Independent certification to a global forestry scheme provides a good basis for making claims about your commitment to responsible forestry. |
|
Improved quality and management systems. Many certified companies find that the certification process brings unexpected benefits such as cost savings. |
|
Dual FSC and PEFC certification can help you tackle supply issues. Adding PEFC certification to your FSC certification enables you to take advantage of fluctuating availability of certified raw materials and meet your customers' demands for certified products. Dual certification normally implies less than twice the investment. For example, FSC and PEFC CoC audits can often be conducted simultaneously. |
