Help is on its way for companies which already are or wish to become both PEFC and FSC chain of custody certified.
NEPCon is launching a project that aims to simplify Danish companies’ work to ensure compliance with the certification requirements.
The purpose of the project is to develop a free checklist integrating all requirements contained in the FSC’s as well as PEFC’s chain of custody standards. This tool will enable users to ensure compliance with both systems based on a single list of requirements. Since several requirements in the two standards are almost identical, the integrated list will be considerably shorter than a simple list of all requirements in the two standards put together.
To maximize their access to the fast growing market for certified goods, many companies choose certification according to both the PEFC and the FSC systems. This may often be achieved at a modest additional cost compared to single-scheme certification. However, subsequently many companies find it demanding to stay updated within two different systems. This situation tends to reduce the interest in certification and puts small and medium companies at a disadvantage.
”We expect that companies, which are already certified according to both systems, will find the checklist a help in reducing their certification-related work. The chain of custody requirements are comprehensive and complex, so it is no easy matter for the companies to work with two systems”, says project manager Peter Feilberg. ”Also, when the work is simplified, smaller companies will be enabled to join both systems.”
The checklist will initially be produced in Danish. It will be made publicly available, easily accessible at NEPCon’s homepage www.nepcon.org, and free to use for all companies and certification bodies.
The project is developed and implemented by NEPCon, with support from the Danish Forest and Nature Agency. Representatives of PEFC-Denmark and FSC-Denmark are participating as observers. The project’s results will be communicated broadly.

Main project elements
- The PEFC and FSC CoC standards are similar in many aspects, but there are also differences. The project therefore includes a thorough analysis of differences and similarities between the two standards.
- A draft integrated checklist and user guidance will be subject to a pilot test in a Danish company. This will ensure the user-friendliness of the developed tools.
- External quality assurance of the product will take place, in order to ensure that the checklist is a complete and accurate reproduction of all requirements contained in the FSC and PEFC CoC standards. The quality assurance will be done by NEPCon’s accredited partners, the Rainforest Alliance (FSC) and BMG Trada Certifiering AB (PEFC).
- The end product will be a final checklist and user guidance, ready for use.
- The checklist and user guidance will be publicly available and may be used by companies as well as certification bodies.
- The project period is 1 March – 1 December 2008.
- The project is supported by the Danish Forest and Nature Agency.
